Julia's role at ICAEW is to develop and deliver high quality support for members who hold executive or non-executive director roles, as well as members who aspire to join a board.

As part of this support for members, she runs the Corporate Governance Community, a network of more than 5,000 ICAEW members and governance professionals. The community hosts a rich programme of roundtables, panel events and networking events on topics, such as: culture, trust in business, and board dynamics.

Julia works with a wide range of members across business and practice to understand their challenges and ensure their views are fed back into ICAEW’s policy making and member services.

Title  People, purpose & the pandemic: how will boards evolve after COVID-19?
Date  19 August
Time  11:15-12:00

Boards have faced unprecedented challenges since the COVID-19 outbreak took hold in the UK. The decisions they have taken will shape their strategy, composition and governance into the future – even their very decision making itself.

As businesses emerge from lockdown and move into the recovery, boards have an opportunity to change how they function for the better. Informed by the social, political and wider business response to the crisis, they will be actively considering the three Ps:

  • Purpose – how has a corporation’s purpose changed?
  • People – what have they learned from the treatment of staff, stakeholders, suppliers?
  • Process – what will boards do differently? Has governance fundamentally changed?

Julia joins Professor Alex Edmans (London Business School & Academic Director, Centre for Corporate Governance) and Beatriz Pessoa de Araujo (Partner, Corporate, Baker McKenzie LLP) to discuss this hot topic.

Key takeaways and why you should watch

  • Explore the latest thinking on how COVID-19 will fundamentally change boards and business’ role in society and community.
  • Hear from an expert panel drawn from business, academia and ICAEW’s membership to explore these issues.
